What is PM Internship Scheme

  • Duration: One-year internship program
  • Eligibility: Candidates aged 21-24 who are not currently employed full-time
  • Stipend: Interns receive a monthly stipend of ₹4,500 from the government and an additional ₹500 from their employer.
  • One-time Grant: A one-time government grant of ₹6,000 is provided to cover incidental expenses.
  • Insurance Coverage: Interns are covered under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.

Benefits of the PM Internship Scheme for Candidates

  • Real-world Experience: Gain practical experience in top companies and learn from industry experts.
  • Skill Development: Develop essential skills like teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and leadership.
  • Networking Opportunities: Build connections with professionals in your field and expand your network.
  • Career Advancement: Enhance your career prospects and increase your chances of securing a job after the internship.
  • Financial Support: Receive a monthly stipend and a one-time grant to cover expenses.

What are the challenges faced by companies?

  • Mobilization and Identification of the Relevant Interns: Many youths lack a career mindset and need nurturing; they come from diverse regions with limited access, so stipends alone aren’t enough. Long-term socio-economic support and mentorship are essential.
  • Absence of a system to evaluate/ onboard/ verify/ manage the interns: Standard HR processes may not suit this demographic. A specialized, cost-effective system is needed to evaluate, onboard, and manage interns while ensuring compatibility with existing HR platforms and government compliance.
  • The Skilling ecosystem needs to be weaved in: Identifying and training interns is crucial for their growth. Customized skilling options (virtual, hybrid, in-person) and partnerships across India are needed to make the process seamless.
